Language in the Community
Language in the Community
For generations the Moken lived in boat villages off the shore of Thailand. After the 2004 Tsunami, the Moken were forced to relocate on land, where for economic and social reasons, they are being pressured to assimilate into mainstream Thai culture. This comes at the cost of their rich cultural heritage. My project intends to record their oral language, before it dies out with the older generations.
