Hisamatsu Album
English Description In the Hisamatsu region, every year on the 4th of May (lunar calendar) a festival honoring the god of the sea, Haari takes place. It is considered one of the most important events of the year by locals. This short film focuses on accounts retold by Chiyo and Shizu YONAHA and Kiyo KUGA (voice appearance only) of their memories surrounding Haari. The interview was answered in both the Miyako Language and in Standardized Japanese. In 2019, our team was able to record that year's Haari. This film also includes interviews discussing the Yuni (sandhills), first-person accounts Hо̄gen-fuda (language tags) in local schools due to historic language policies, and other accounts relating to the memory of family, language, and Hisamatsu. Written by Dr. Sachiyo FUJITA-ROUND Translated and Edited by Shinano E. T. ANGEVINE
