Enfield uses the linguistic diversity of Southeast Asia, and the Tai language family, to advocate for the need to change what he terms 'the traditional approach' of essentialist linguistics to a 'unit-based' approach wherein the unit is individual speakers. His arguments involve information and analysis of the Tai Language family, their historical co-development and phonetics which are quite useful.
