Our Ibani Language Revitalization programme started as a Facebook group to bring our people online together to begin to share simple questions and answers in the language, share stories, names and meanings, etc. (Fun fact: most people bear our language names without knowing their meanings, it was heart warming when young people started learning the meaning of their Ibani names on our platform).
Before Facebook, though, we had tried other initiatives which did not catch the interest of the people, especially youths. Social media has played a critical role in the progress of our initiative.
Today, Let's Speak Ibani has effectively spread around our communities both at home and across the world and we are expanding our programmes and content to effectively impact our people, although, there are still challenges with funding especially stipends for volunteers and teachers. We hope to be able to put out quality content across social media platforms and reach our people in the community with in person engagement, classes and other resources.
We were able to launch a mobile app on the Google Playstore (ios coming up) featuring a dictionary, video lessons and ebooks.
We have applied for incorporation as a Trustee with the hope that we may find partners in future to help us deliver this programme more effectively for our people.
