Building a community of n̓səl̓xčin̓ speakers

Learn more about N̓ʔiy̓sítaʔtkʷ (LaRae) and ʔaˤn̓n̓ (Chris) wonderful work in creating and implementing their very successful Sƛ̓x̌atkʷ N̓səlxcin Sn̓mam̓áy̓aʔtn (Salish School of Spokane) starting all the way back in 2004. From a grassroots initiative, their project has grown quite successfully over the past 22 years, and is excited for the launch of their new school building. Currently, they have 50 students enrolled, ages 1 to 14 and have 26 language teachers who continue to train in daily intensive language classes, and additionally have 48 adults enrolled in evening classes. Their school is grounded in culture, teaching their young students about who they are and where they come from, and what bountiful gifts their territory provides them with.

Their long-term vision includes utilizing their upcoming new building to build towards creating something similar to a winter camp, a place that would be completely intact language culture community speaking n̓səl̓xčin̓ - a place where Salish citizens can come not only practice their culture, but also live it.
