"Native Speakers often refer to TSK simply as... 'Songway language'. This distinguishes the language from the other languages of the immediate area, chiefly Fulfulde (spoken by Fulbe people), along with the little Dogon and Tamashek (Taureg). I have heard the fuller expression... 'mountain Songway language' to distinguish the language from other Songway languages..."
"The local primary school is attended chiefly by Songhay ethnics (very few Fulbe or Dogon attended school during my fieldwork)"
Kikara, Banikani, Mounivel, Ganka, Dansa, Albengouma, Ganda Bundo
"Kikara... a village some 35 km northeast of Douentza, an administrative town on the Mopti-to-Gao highway ... Other nearby villages where TSK is spoken, and whose inhabitants frequent the weekly Kikara market, are Banikani, Mounivel, and Ganka.TSK or something similar is said to be spoken in a few other villages in the Douentza region not easily reached from Kikara, namely Dansa, Albengouma, and Ganda Bundo. ... Until the reorganization of local governments in Mali in 1999, Kikara was an arrondissement, part of the "cercle" of Douentza, which in turn was part of the "région" (i.e. province) of Mopti. Now Kikara and Douentza are called 'communes.' ... The core village of Kikara is located on a shelf on the lower part of the cliff, a position that could have been easily defended in a less pacific eras. On the flad ground extending out from the base of the cliff, a local weekly market is held - the only one in the zone."
