Only a few speakers remain in rural areas of Liuzhi City and Zhenning County; in Zhijin, Qianxi and Dafang counties, despite the presence of over 100,000 members of the Gelao nationality; the language has been replaced by Chinese. In Vietnam about 30 semispeakers who call themselves ‘Vanto’ live in one Kíolao community of 400.
