Bakwam'kala - I speak Kwakwala/Likwala/Gutsala/Nakwala

This is a site has been started to support revitalization of Bakwam'kala (native tongue) within the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation.
Our focus is on what needs to happen for us to learn the basics of our language and increase the numbers of intermediate and master Bakwam'kala speakers that we may share our life's experiences with one another through our ancestral tongues.
On this page we will share info about language gatherings, language resources, grammar patterns, practical exercises, all with the intent to inspire & support one another on our path to increasing fluency amongst our people.

Through attending our gatherings, we aim to have a good level of conversational Bakwam'kala.
This includes but is not limited to;
- Mastery of Kwakwala/Likwala Alphabet, being able to write and say the sounds.
- Understanding pronouns and using them with verbs.
- Understanding and use of tenses; speaking about past, present, and future.
- Understanding of location, and speaking about them in the past, present, and future.

We are looking to future activities that could include summer retreats where the groups from Victoria, Vancouver, and the northern tribes can get together and engage in activities using our ancestral tongue, similar to the Woss retreats in Namgis territory.
