This is an abridged version of a report from a national dialogue session on Indigenous languages of Canada, held in 2016 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Hosted by the First Peoples’ Cultural Council, the session brought together twenty Indigenous language experts from across Canada and representatives from the Department of Canadian Heritage "to discuss approaches to Indigenous language revitalization in Canada. The dialogue was built around four themes: (1) language rights, legislation and policy, (2) community-based revitalization, (3) education, and (4) urban strategies. A report was produced which may be used as a starting point for further consultations on the development of a new federal approach to addressing the need for recognition, protection and revitalization of Indigenous languages such as legislation and an Indigenous languages commission."
