Pioneer Day, also called Ééhaniih Day (Rememberance Day), was held the weekend of August 1, 2008, at the base of Navajo Mountain (Naatsis'áán), on the Arizona side. This celebration is meant to commemorate the Navajos who lived in the Navajo Mountain area and did not go on the Long Walk. It is held in the fashion of the old-style Navajo fairs, with foot races, horse races, etc. You won't find ferris wheels or roller coasters at this event... or maybe not yet. It is an awesome event to attend. I enjoyed myself. I showed up first for JMI (Just Move It). JMI's are fun walks or runs held over the Navajo Rez. They are also known by the Navajo slogan "T'áá hwó ájít'éego" (i.e. by your own effort or perseverance). I ended up camping out & watching all the events. It was awesome!
