For thousands of years the Chukchansi people and their language thrived in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Now, however, the Chukchansi Yokuts language is at risk of extinction. Only a handful of native speakers remain. They alone hold the key to the preservation of the language. Speakers of Chukchansi, educators with the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians, and Faculty and graduate students in Linguistics at California State University, Fresno have helped to build a strong foundational understanding of this complex and fascinating language, but there is much left to be accomplished. In the summer of 2009 we devised an alphabet and writing system, but native speakers and teachers must still gain proficiency. A dictionary is being developed and a collection of texts is being assembled. Curriculum and learning materials are being developed to spread written and spoken Chukchansi beyond the classroom and back into social and ritual contexts.
