Background information

Since 2004, members of the community of Konomerume, Suriname and I have been working together to document, describe, preserve, and revitalize the Aretyry dialect of Kari’nja. In 2010, three community member teams—including elder speaker/teachers, young adult teacher/learners, and a technology team—traveled to Oregon to participate in the Institute on Field Linguistics and Language Documentation (InField). Our ongoing work together includes sharing what we have learned with members of neighboring communities in Suriname and elsewhere.
